Claim your 2022 tax refund by 31 December 2026

Revenue's four year rule: after that date, claims for 2022 cannot be repaid.

Time left to claim for 2022
Until 31 December 2026
Revenue's four year rule closes 2022 claims at the end of 2026.

Revenue only lets you request reviews or claim refunds for the last four years. Its own example is that claims for 2022 must be made by 31 December 2026. Claims made after that date cannot be repaid.

Checking is free. Starting takes a few minutes in myAccount, and Revenue says the Statement of Liability arrives about five working days after you complete the return. Many people will find nothing is owed. If something is, it is your money, and it is yours to claim for free.

Only the 2022 date is written out in Revenue's example. The other dates apply the same rule year by year. Revenue's PAYE return page agrees: a return must be made within four years after the end of the tax year, and it says that from January 2025 you could submit returns for 2021 to 2024, which leaves 2020 out.

The rule covers both PAYE and self-assessment (self-employed) taxpayers.

What you might be able to claim for 2022

How to check and claim 2022 in myAccount

  1. Sign in to myAccount on revenue.ie and complete the two-factor authentication step.
  2. Under PAYE Services, click Review your tax for the previous 4 years.
  3. Select Request for 2022 to get your Statement of Liability. Revenue says it arrives in about five working days after you complete the return.
  4. Click Complete Income Tax Return, and add any reliefs under Tax Credits & Reliefs, for example health expenses or the rent tax credit.
  5. Submit the return. Repeat for any other open year you want to check.
A review can also show you owe tax. Revenue uses the same return to confirm tax you underpaid as well as tax you overpaid, so the result is not always a refund.

If you are self-employed, claim through your tax return in ROS instead.

You do not need to pay anyone

Revenue's service is free and you can do all of this yourself. Some companies charge a fee or take a share. Check their terms. You are always free to claim directly, and we do not recommend any claim service.
