Stamp duty explained
How it works
Stamp duty is a tax you pay when you buy a property. For a home it is 1% of the price up to €1 million, 2% on the part from €1 million to €1.5 million, and 6% on anything above that. Other property, like shops or offices, is 7.5%.
An example
You buy a home for €400,000. 1% of that is €4,000. For a €1.7 million home you would pay €10,000 + €10,000 + €12,000 = €32,000.
Good to know
The rate is the same for first-time buyers. Your solicitor pays it for you when you complete the purchase.
