How to claim tax back in Ireland

You can check and claim a refund yourself, for free, for the last four years.

You may be owed tax back if you paid too much tax, or if you have costs that qualify for tax relief and have not claimed them yet. Revenue lets you claim for the last four years, and each year is claimed separately.

How to check, step by step (PAYE workers)

  1. Log in to myAccount on revenue.ie.
  2. Open PAYE Services and choose Review your tax for the previous 4 years. Check each year.
  3. If a refund looks possible, request a Statement of Liability for that year, then click Complete Income Tax Return.
  4. Add any reliefs you are entitled to, such as health expenses or the rent tax credit. For the current year, some reliefs can be claimed during the year in myAccount.

You do not need to pay anyone

Revenue's service is free, and you can do all of this yourself. Some companies offer to claim for you and keep a share of your refund. You are always free to do it directly.

Keep your receipts

For health expenses, Revenue says to keep your receipts for six years, and you do not need to send them in. For remote working relief you must upload your bills with the claim.

Questions

How far back can I claim?

Four years. Revenue processes each tax year as a separate claim.

Does it cost anything?

No. Claiming through Revenue myAccount is free.

Does this apply to the self-employed?

The steps above are for PAYE workers. People who file their own return use Revenue's ROS service instead, but the same reliefs and four-year limit apply.
